And those design changes still have to be made in the future if you want to run kentsfield. Since those changes are inevitable, why not make them sooner and take advantage of cheaper chips earlier?

Since the intel switch, apple has ALREADY broken away from "what they've always done". We saw a speed bump in MPB before it even shipped, and another bump not long after that.

No, they were *announced* at the same time. iMac shipped immediately, MBP shipped weeks later. So the intel iMacs did arrive first.

i stand corrected. the macbook pros didn't ship till febuary though they could be preordered. The iMacs began shipment in january right after the announcment

At this point, pure rumor, not even vaporware, as vaporware implies the company has actually announced something.

ARM does have chips that can compete at the very lowest end of x86, such as with the chips presently running Netbooks. But it doesn't have anything even remotely competitive with the mainstream chips. (To use names: They compete with Atom, not with Core.)

to be fair, the rumor puts this out 2 years, and ARM does have higher-end chips planned.

Why not move their iOS hardware to Intel now that Samsung seems to be losing their ability to respect their own customer's IP? Intel would have no motivation to co-opt Apple IP (Intel doesn't build products), and they have the most sophisticated fab technology on earth.

    Ah, standby power you say?

If Apple moves their Macs away from Intel that'll encourage a lot of Mac users including myself to consider switching to buying Windows machines. Boot Camp is an important Mac feature and Intel processors are the best.
Windows 8 will work on ARM, as Microsoft has said.. current builds already do, apparently.

How is a cloud based system going to work when bandwidth limits for cell phone data is low, and overage fees are high?

I really hope wwdc is going to focus on computers rather than its IOS toys.

No, he's talking about the drawing that shows something like a 24" iMac than can be swivelled down on your desktop from it's normal upright position to a slightly inclined position (like an iPad on it's new triangle smart cover back rest) and then you lift your arms up and use the 24" screen like an iPad.

    Seems such a bad idea.

I like the idea of a giant touch screen in the surface of a desk, for some uses, but I'm really unsure about swinging an iMac screen around and sticking your hands all over it.

    This image here: http://www.alltouchtablet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/touchscreen-apple-imac.jpg

Yeah, neat idea conceptually...but in practice I would personally rather not have my iMac look like a school bus window:p

Yes, but where is my Sandy Bridge Mac mini?!

This. With the current capabilities of the Sandy Bridge MBP's, I'd love a few SB Minis, in one of these:

    ....
I have to ask you, aside from base 10, what makes metric superior?

If it is to have an easier time with conversions and what not, then why would I leave a system that I am very familiar with, even if it is not base 10?

I don't believe one system is better than the other. They are just different.

Metric is just easier to learn. Period. How many inches to 7 yards? If I want to divide 7 yards, 8 & 13/16 inches into 3 equal sections (+/- a 1/4 inch) what is that length? If I want to estimate how heavy something is, I can fill a metric container with water and know how heavy it is since 1 litre = 1 kilo. Etc Etc How heavy is a gallon of water? A pint? A cup?

Yes there will be transitional period. People with a "feel" for things will be confused for a bit. But keep in mind that many of the things that measure will be in US units for a bit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the USA the only nation still using the old measurements? Certainly the only developed nation.

For manufacturing, my impression is that the U.S. does use metric. Maybe that is because most stuff is manufactured overseas or for something like automobiles, they are marketed worldwide.

I can tell you that a lot of stuff manufactured in the US is still using the old units. We Canadians, supposedly metric, get to live with it. We don't make our own paint cans, so we buy a gallon of paint. But... we can't label it as a gallon so it's sold as a 3.79 litre can. Same thing for beer. We buy it in 331ml, or 347ml units (or something like that).

Best of all.... When Environment Canada calls for a -5 day I crank the thermostat up to 69 and think about roasting a 3kg chicken with 1/2lb of potatoes, in an oven set at 375. When I bought the chicken the supermarket had a sale on in the deli. Buy 1/2 lb of sliced roast beef, and get 100gs of potato salad free.

I'll drive 10 km to visit my friend who lives in a 1200sq/ft house. It's nice, they have a view since they are 300m(etres) up the bluff. They can see Five Mile Creek, which is at least 25km away. Except if it's storming. We can storms here with winds of at least 100kph and that will drop an inch or two of rain. On the mainland, the Fraser river, which is over 2200 km long, can rise 10, 12, even 15 feet in the spring melt. The flow is an astronomical number of cubic feet per minute, and it gotta be moving at a 15-20kph easy. Though sometimes they do quote that figure in cubic metres per minute (264 gallons).

I have both imperial and a metric socket wrench kits. I've assembled BBQs that had both. You can tell which parts came from the US, and which didn't. IKEA is always metric. Lawnmowers are typically Imperial. My camera gear is both. (Tripod sockets are 1/4 or 1/8 inch coarse threads. Lighting stands use metric allen keys, unless they are US made.)

So to my American Cousins. Just switch already and get it over with! Make life easier for every one else in the world, 'kay!?! Eh?

I don't even bother with calculating fuel economy any more. The official measurement is litres/100km, but I still think in MPG, but buy fuel in litres. But I know that our Smart car has an 8 gallon tank.

i don't think it would appeal to that many people, to have an apple tablet.

i mean, the PC/Win versions aren't great sellers...

Probably used more for medical infomatics applications than anything else. Here at the nursing college I work for we are always evaluating Windoze tablet computers for medical applications. Sure would be nice to see a Mac alternative out there.

Apple is devoid of morals and innovation? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea of Apple's philanthropy? Also, Apple INVENTED the whole concept of touch UI for iPhone and iPad

Yep you're right. Apple invented the touch UI. Before Apple, Palm used a keyboard and mouse to dial numbers in the Palm OS phones. Also what philanthropy are you talking about?

[url="http://semiaccurate.com/2011/05/05/apple-dumps-intel-from-laptop-lines/"]SemiAccurate claims (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/06/apple-to-move-from-intel-to-arm-processors-in-future-laptops/) to have heard that Apple will be transitioning from Intel processors to ARM processors in the not too distant future.

    Interesting rumour.

I heard the other way around, that Apple will be using Intel as its main processor manufacturer (http://www.winbeta.org/?q=news/intel-build-next-generation-processor-ios-devices) for the iPad,iPod Touch, and iPhone, and will more than likely make that switch within the next year.

Reasons may be because of the ongoing lawsuits between Apple and Samsung, which they currently use.

I heard it enough, that it even got slashdotted (http://apple.slashdot.org/story/11/05/03/1357202/Intel-To-Build-Next-Gen-Processor-For-iOS-Devices).

So why go the exact opposite for the laptops when they would still be with Intel for their other devices? It would make better sense to standardize across the board.

    BL.

So what is there to expect before MWSF?

    Well, new iPods, for one:

Full Screen Video iPod, possibly with accompanying new iTunes service.
    Redesigned-nano + upgraded
    Updated shuffle (finally)

    Also, new hardware:

New chips for MBP + possible case redesign
    New chips for iMac too

    -=|Mgkwho

The MBP will be done on a random day. Its a 'Pro' model andParis is more for the consumer goods like iMacs and iPods etc

Can it be free some time in the next...Week or so? They're about to charge my card, but I do want to keep using the service. $99 is a bit much but Find My iPhone is practically worth it alone.

Its a little late for you but as other have mentioned you can pretty much always buy MM from amazon for around $70 then just enter the code to renew.
