I don't see what the big deal is. Of course Apple is going to try to minimize the risk of the jailbreak community. They want to avoid headlines about spyware and such that creep out of the jailbroken community. It's just good PR.

BRLawyer... you talk about market share and other quantitative data as if they were the last and only delimiting factor. Obviously YOU do NOT use a tablet. Allow me to enlighten you about the benefits you do not know about or care to investigate:
1. Tablets allow me to lecture while writing and projecting simultaenously, thereby allowing me to retain a written record of what I actually keep.
2. Because I am involved in about 10 educational and professional committees, I use the MS OneNote program to create virtual file folders. Sure, you can do this with Mac journal type programs, but I am able to write within each folder in my own handwriting, which not only increases my memory retention, but is far more polite when you are in the mixed company of those with more power and money than you.
3. Because I am able to keep handwritten notes, I am able to reduce the amount of paper I carry with me. It is both tiresome and counterproductive to retain endless amounts of paper files.
4. I am able to receive assignments, faculty reports, articles, journal papers, etc., and ink them digitally and then return the marked document WITHOUT printing out and hauling around what amounts to about a vertical foot of paper. I challenge anyone to mark up and edit a document faster using a keyboard than they can with a "pen" type arrangement.
5. In science and engineering fields where you often have mix of graphical, formulaic, and written data, it is far superior to write out notes of mixed symbols than to type them on a keyboard. The keyboard is faster argument ONLY applies to situations where you do not have to interpret and draw diagrams.
The argument that tablets are only useful for artists is totally without merit: explain to me then why the Deans of both engineering and science at my university use tablets.
I must stress that too many people harp on the need for the OS to interpret handwriting perfectly. What many people discover after using a tablet is that often you leave your notes handwritten: they are yours, filed away for your use, and for your reference.
Is the tablet perfect? No. Is it for everyone? No. Is it cheaper than a notebook? No. However, your market share - not enough people use or need one - argument is without substance. This is good news for future Macbook owners. I'm interested in when the iMac will get Conroe. A friend of mine is switching from Windows and wants the iMac but is waiting for Conroe in the iMac. I only hope they go with the desktop processor in the iMac and not Merom since he's not interested in the mobile processor in his desktop.Why would they give the Macbook that but leave the iMac with the original Core Duo? Doesn't make sense. I would think all three would get it or just the Macbook Pro.Well, hopefully the iMac will be updated sooner than the portables. Conroe is out and available in quantities now where as Merom won't be as available in quantities until the end of this month.I believe there's a an entirely new iMac in the works. The current design can't handle the heat Conroe will want to throw at it. And the Kentsfield 4-core processor will want even better cooling. Currently the iMac looks like it has a G5 inside. Apple doesn't like their Macs to look the same over too long a time.
Here's the Conroe processors I hope Apple will use in the all new iMac:
Core 2 Duo E6700 - 2.67 GHz (4 MiB L2, 1066 MHz FSB) 20 $1699 & 23" $1999

Several things. Apple's stock growth will slow, and the price will take a hit. Big deal? Maybe, maybe not. But I can tell you definitively that there is a large amount of padding in the price based on Apple keeping up with it's own defined yearly cycle. The successive cycle that has stayed strict through every iPhone, iPod, iPad, and iOS launch for 5 years has created a pattern that Apple must stick to, or risk losing ground in the mind of investors.
No one ever expected/demanded Apple to go to a yearly cycle for such advanced refreshes, but they're the ones who chose to do it. If they now begin to fall behind, the growth they've seen WILL suffer, no ifs ands or buts about it.

I've made only one phone call so far, which worked fine, but the phone uses the mount's speaker even when you're plugged into the car stereo (music and/or Tomtom app voice stops in the car speakers, and then the phone call comes out of the mount speaker). I could hear the phone call fine driving around town, but I'm a little worried about how well I'll be able to hear phone calls at freeway speeds in my noisy little car (a Honda Fit).
By any chance do you have a bluetooth headset to test with? I'm wondering if the iPhone can be connected to this kit for the improved GPS while using another bluetooth device for the handsfree calling.

Apple would probably HURT the competition more by easing up production of iPads allowing competitors to buy up more screens.
See, the competitors would buy too many screens, then never be able to sell their crappy devices, thus lose a lot of money and go bankrupt.

Why all the hate for the jailbreak? Are you guys just too moronic to use it? Any iOS device is infinitely more capable when it is jailbroken. Without some of the apps in the Cydia store, many would say the iphone/ipad/touch is unusable. What is on your lockscreen all of you unjailbroken users? A measly clock? You cant access all your mail, notifications, calendar events, and the weather from your lockscreen? Are you serious? Oh you want to turn off bluetooth? You can't swipe across the bottom of the screen to toggle it? Want integrated google voice? Apple says no. Cydia says **** that, hell yes. I would wager that most of the jailbreak haters dont even know what its capable of nor have ever tried it before. Stay in your cave and watch shadows if you will. The rest of us will experience the real world.

add me to another purchaser of android phone. i myself have iphone. i wanted to buy a smartphone for a family member. considered iphone but one thing that drove me away from iphone was the requirement of a pc to activate it. no such requirement for android.

But, at what point does an interface become too generic? For example, the concept of pages of icons in a grid isn't really new or innovative. The concept of swiping across screens is simple and intuitive and should be standardized
(e.g. copied) for that exact reason. Should other phone makers put the icons in a circle, "just because" they need to be different? Should they force you to do something differently just because the best and most intuitive way was "already taken"?
Everyone loves car analogies, so: what if Ford decided to sue other carmakers because they copied their steering wheel design? So... cloud computing benefits whom exactly? It's great for syncing - but even unreliable there. Caldav and Google Sync are both problematic. Dropbox works pretty well... but I use if for very specific things. Who wants to stream audio and video in when local storage is so cheap?

I think we're entering an era of increasing instability and uncertainty, and we should be designing more robust networks and backups, not systems that will experience cascading failure when the power drops out at a sever farm or there's a natural (or man-made) disaster somewhere in the world. The basic fact is vector graphics aren't always appropriate. A lot of things really can only be done, or can be done much better, with pixels. For any image with a lot of detail, it's easier -- both for the artists making them, and for the computers rendering them -- to store an extremely high resolution bitmapped image, and then downscale it as necessary, than it is to make and render a vectorized version that is "truly" resolution independent.
And now Apple's realized that by targeting "Retina Display" resolution levels, this is the last increase in image sizes they'll ever reasonably need: there's no point in making images bigger beyond this point (or displays with higher-than-retina-level DPI one would need to render them) because your eyes really won't be able to tell the difference.

Yeah you bring up a good point. I can't imagine assembling iPods is the most engaging activity ever, and most Americans would probably scoff at the kind of labor they seem to think is below them.
Kind of similar to when they raise an uproar about illegal immigrants taking all the jobs away, when they wouldn't be caught dead doing the kind of work some immigrants do.

As for having a feel for the numbers, he's not alone. I have nearly 20 years of professional experience using Imperial units as a mechanical engineer, as does every mechanical engineer in the U.S. Switching systems (or, rather, making it mandatory) will require all of these engineers to re-learn the formulae they've known and used for decades. That's the equivalent of millions of man-years of engineering experience down the drain. That isn't progress, no matter how much you might want want to believe it is.

While your needs are not the same as mine, we both seem to find this an important technology to work with. I do believe there is a BIG market out there, no one has really been able to capture it. Maybe it is just a timing thing?
I agree ... there could be a myriad of reasons why the tablet platform is not as universally accepted as one would think. I've never stipulated that everybody must use a tablet or that it is perfect. What is irritating are the perpetual naysayers who focus on one aspect while ignoring everything else it has to offer and its potential. :)

Just wanted to add, for everyone reading a lot into shipping dates etc., I ordered mine on Sep 11 and got the notice of delays, then notice it was shpped out today (was planning on cancelling after this news).
Now, it will probably be around the 25th before I get, and I won't open it, but considering I have upgrades (so customization = no return) how hard do you guys think it would be for me to exchange it for an updated one?
